reVIEW: Alumni Selections by SYD MEAD

Overall the show was pretty eclectic. A good mix of painting, photography, sculpture, and design. The opening was well attended, though with all the people and schmoozing it’s hard to really get a good feel for the work on display. Best to check out the show now that the opening has passed. Go check it out in person!

Syd Mead is an internationally renowned artist, illustrator, conceptual designer and futurist who has worked on projects ranging including vehicle, costume, prop, and background designs for movies (Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, 2010 and Short Circuit) and games, and even the design of a 747 aircraft for the Royal House of Saudi Arabia.

This is exhibition is organized by the CCS Alumni Council to support the CCS Alumni Scholarship Fund. Proceeds from the sale of artworks will go directly to the Scholarship Fund. Help a deserving student continue their studies…Buy Art!

On Jan. 22, 2010, the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, MI will host an alumni exhibition titled ‘reVIEW: Alumni Selections by Syd Mead.’ John Azoni, a graduate of CCS, has been selected to exhibit his painting titled “Pastries” in the show.

Breakfast Paintings

I was recently making pancakes for myself, following a recipe which had a typo in it calling for 2 tablespoons of baking powder, instead of 2 teaspoons. Big difference. You’ll have very foamy pancake batter. They tasted good just the same. In the process I looked at the bottle of syrup we have in our house and noticed it boasted “no high fructose corn syrup!!” Then on the back, the first ingredient was corn syrup. Minor marketing technicality.

Anyway, keeping with the doughy breakfast spirit, these waffle-centric paintings I just listed on my Etsy. They are small, 5×5 in. acrylic on canvas.

I spend a good amount of time on Etsy these days. There are a lot of sites out there where you can buy artwork, but Etsy is like the Google of those sites. There’s such a vibrant community on there, and it’s affording a lot of people the ability to quit their day jobs and make a living off their creativity. I am not one of those people for the record. So anyway, Etsy has a strong craft focus, but I’m gonna cut right to the paintings. Here are some good people to check out:

Michael Chilcutt’s work reminds me a lot of Robert Rauschenberg, one of my all-time favorite artists. See below.

If you’re into weird creepy stuff, the above artist, Harry Boardman (365Monsters) does some great stuff. He does a new painting/drawing on paper every day, all monster-themed.

"The Antelope and Wolf" - Gheybin Comish

This artist, Gheybin Comish (Gheybin on Etsy) has some really great stuff for sale. Mostly prints, but a few originals. Her line work is really exceptional, I think.

Millions of Peaches

Painting peaches reminds me of that Presidents of United States of America song, “Peaches”. I used to jam that CD all the time.

Anyway, for a short time I was on a plum kick, but after yesterdays painting session I’ve moved on to peaches. These are paintings done on little 5×5 in. canvas’ that I stretched gallery-wrap-style over recycled wood panels. Very durable, cost efficient, and eco-friendly way to paint, that’s for sure.

New Food Paintings

Plum Paintings

I went in somewhat of a new direction with this most recent group of paintings. I started out by just praying small puddles of deep purple spray paint onto the canvas, and then building the painting around them. To make the painting work I found I had to use more toned down colors to allow the plums to stand out, resulting in these really quiet paintings, maybe with the exception of Plums 2 – the one in the middle.
